When you think about your ideal career as being only one (and you may even feel that you haven’t found it yet even after many years of exploring and seeking it out), then, you are limiting your ability to powerfully create another one of your careers of a lifetime. You are limiting your potential for experiencing the magnificence that life has to offer you by allowing you to create over and over again different careers with different opportunities to contribute to the world. By thinking you can only have one ideal career, you are limiting the vast possibilities in the expression of your passions. You have many areas of passion, many things that make you joyful. With this book, we intend to remind you what those passions are. You will do the work and we will be your teachers.
Now, we realize that some of what we are saying sounds idealistic to you. In fact, you may be thinking something like, “Yes, well, I would love to have multiple careers in my lifetime, but life is too short and I have gone to school and gotten a degree and dedicated so much of my time to this career and there’s no way I can start another one. Anyway, even if I could start another career, how long would it take me to make any kind of real income with it?” Or, you might be thinking, “If I haven’t found my calling by now after all these years of hard work and trying and trying, it certainly doesn’t seem possible to find it now. The best I can hope for is a better paying job in the career that I already have.”
We understand why you might feel this way. After all, most of your life you’ve been told by your parents and teachers, neighbors and friends that if you go to college and get a degree, and work hard by really, really focusing on one thing, you will become an expert in your field, and success will be yours. That’s how our parents found happiness, right? This book is not about helping you find your next job, although you will. It’s about reminding you where your passions lie and then helping to guide you towards creating a powerful career that fills your life with joy. A career can only be joyful if it somehow is an answer to your deepest desires about who you are and who you want to become. If your career is not joyful, it is our belief that you are not only robbing yourself but you are also robbing the rest of us of the greatest gift you bring to this world – YOUR SELF!
